GLB: Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio; SLO,EJB:Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health. USDA:APHIS:VS, Fort Collins, Colorado. Summary: We analyzed data collected in the National Swine Survey to find the management variables that may affect preweaning piglet mortality. We also considered other recently reported significant facility variables in our models to expand and unite the two independent investigations. We found that techniques (all-in–all-out and cleaning between groups) which should reduce the exposure of suckling piglets to the pathogens of older or previous inhabitants to be more strongly associated with reduced preweaning mortality than methods to increase immunity or reduce parasites.

Facility effects on preweaning mortality: A report of the NAHMS National Swine Survey
A producer survey that included 885 facilities was conducted to assessthe associationsbetween preweaning mortality and various facility attributes. Using univariate analysisand a multiple regression model, we found a signiffcant association between preweaning mortality and flooring type, heat source, water delivery system, cleaning frequency, cleaning method, and duration of idle time between far...
متن کاملUsing partial budgets to analyze selected management practices associated with reduced preweaning mortality
reweaning mortality has historically been a problem for veterinarians and producers.1-5 While it is important to find management techniques that reduce preweaning mortality, it is also necessary to determine whether these strategies would be economically feasible to implement. The partial budget is a simple economic analysis technique that can nonetheless be a powerful tool in helping determine...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of and risk factors for Toxoplasma gondii in the US swine herd using sera collected during the National Animal Health Monitoring Survey (Swine 2006).
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) initiated the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) in 1983 to collect, analyse and disseminate data on animal health, management and productivity in US domestic livestock populations, including swine. The programme includes an on-farm serological sampling component which can be used to monitor seroprevalence of various pathogens, in...

Despite concerted research efforts, piglet morbidity and mortality remain as significant problems for the swine industry. This is well illustrated in statistics reported by the most recent National Swine Surveys conducted by the USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS, 1997, 2000). These surveys documented little if any improvement in piglet mortality rates (farrowing and nursery p...
متن کامل1 Current Mortality Rates on
Results from the USDA:APHIS:VS National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) Dairy 2002 survey reported that approximately 5% of dairy cows die, on-farm, across the country each year. This is a very high death rate compared with that of beef cows or feedlot animals, where annual death rates were estimated at 1 to1.5%. In the NAHMS survey unknown reasons accounted for the largest percentage (...
